    • Could genetically modified bacteria escape from a laboratory or fermentation tank and cause disease or ecological destruction?
This is not known to have occurred. But two groups of scientists reported on Wednesday that they had developed a complex technique to prevent it from happening.
DISRUPTION, REVOLUTION
    • Why buy 2: The HiSeq 4000 is a big step forwards, costs are likely to drop again making the 2500 less attractive (and sending our 2000 to the skip - For Sale anyone) and output goes up decreasing the number of lanes we need to run. The patterned flowcells also mean we can forget about being quite so careful with library quant. All of this is good news but it does mean we've got to finance new instruments.

    • Read any flow cytometry protocol and somewhere near the beginning will state something to the effect of ‘Place 1 million cells into a tube.’ The question is, faced with that special sample for THE experiment, how do you determine the number of cells in the tube?     • Venture Capital (VC) backing for UK life science companies soared by 41pc last   year to hit $713m (£527m), according to figures seen by The Sunday   Telegraph.  
 The sharp increase in funding for the sector is centred on the so-called   “golden triangle” of London, Oxford and Cambridge, and signals a “coming of   age” for the sector, a
    • Qualcomm (NASDAQ: QCOM), the San Diego wireless technologies giant, plans to form a joint investment business through its corporate ventures arm with the Swiss pharmaceutical giant Novartis. The joint investment entity would make as much as $100 million available for innovative health startups.
  • Earnings Increase Expected for Thermo Fisher Scientific - Forbes
    • Analysts are expecting earnings of $6.91 per share for the fiscal year. Revenue is projected to eclipse the year-earlier total of $3.47 billion by 26%, finishing at $4.38 billion for the quarter. For the year, revenue is projected to come in at $16.78 billion.
  • Illumina earnings beat record | UTSanDiego.com
    •  For all of 2014, Illumina brought in $1.861  billion revenue, compared to $1.421   billion in 2013. The company earned $353  million, or $2.37 per share, compared   to $125 million, or $0.90 per share, in  2013. 
SOMETHING DIFFERENT
    • So what has all this fishing talk got to do with exhibiting products and especially science products you might ask. Well a lot, actually. To me to various components of a successful fishing expedition correlate clearly with components of a well managed trade show. Let me explain.
